OvO: The Minimalist Platformer Speedrunners Kept Coming Back To
A stick figure, white shapes, and a flag at the far side of the screen. That is the entire visual vocabulary, and it is deliberate: nothing competes with the hazards for your attention, so you can read a new room at full speed. What looks like a bare-bones Flash-era platformer turns out to have movement physics deep enough to support a speedrunning scene that is still active years later.
You steer OvO with the arrow keys, jump with up or space, and reach the flag at the end of each stage. Failure costs nothing — death restarts the level instantly, which turns the difficulty into something closer to a rhythm game than an obstacle course. There are dozens of hand-built levels, and the later ones assume you already understand how momentum carries between moves — by that point it expects you to chain two or three techniques without thinking, which is where most players stall.
The Movement System
Four moves, all interacting. Sliding down a slope builds speed and lowers your hitbox; jumping out of a slide carries that speed into a much longer arc than a standing jump does. Wall jumps redirect you sideways and preserve more height than you would expect, and the dive is the wildcard — tapping down in mid-air commits you to a fast diagonal that also cancels forward drift when you need to stop on a platform. Chaining those four without touching the ground to reset your speed is what the whole OvO skill ceiling is made of.
Two habits separate a competent OvO run from a fast one. The first is never landing flat-footed if you can land sliding. The second is the coyote window — you keep a few frames of jump after leaving a ledge, and the trickiest jumps in later levels are built assuming you use it.
Getting Past the Wall
- Restart immediately. Instant resets mean a bad attempt costs two seconds. Treat each death as an iteration, not a penalty.
- Learn one tech per session. Slide-jumps, then dive-cancels, then coyote jumps. Practising them in isolation is faster than hoping to absorb all three while running a level.
- Watch your run replay. The timer only improves in a few specific rooms. Find out which ones before you grind the whole course.
Why It Runs So Well Here
OvO needs inputs to land on the exact frame you press them, which is why it belongs in a browser tab rather than behind an installer. It loads in seconds in the frame above, plays free with no sign-up, and works equally well on a keyboard or a gamepad. If the movement clicks for you, there is a deep catalogue of community-run times to chase — start with one clean run, then start shaving.
